Opening Weekend - Washington-Bred Winners

Hope everyone had a great opening weekend. The weather was nice and kudos to Emerald for getting the meet off to a good start.  No matter how much you lost last weekend always remember the score was 43-8.

Every Tuesday my goal is to write a little bit about the Washington-bred winners of the races from the previous weekend. There were 9 Washington-bred winners from the 21 races this weekend.

Replays of all the races can be seen here:

Race 1 Saturday: Won by Poly Squat in 110.43.  Poly Squat is by Raise the Bluff who stands at El Dorado Farms and is out of the mare Radio Caroline who resides at Griffin Place. Poly Squat was bought for $14,000 at the WTBOA sale and was bred by Griffin Place. Poly Squat has a yearling full sibling that was born on February 15 of last year. Other winners from Radio Caroline include Rhinghals (Matty G) and Mrs. U (Horse Chestnut).

Race 3 Saturday: Ouch! Redsolocup, besides being well named, burned me on the Pick 4. Hurts even more that I used to own 10% of the dam, Trainingat the Bar.  Plus, I love bars so much. How could I not include him? Now along with Scat Daddybaby Syndrome (see prior post) there is Redsolocup Syndrome, which is defined as not including a horse in your Pick 4 or 5 investments when you used to own part of the family.  Lesson learned. Congrats to Warlock Stables and Scott’s Horseplayers Racing Club. They also get Owners’ and Breeders’ awards for the win, which can be a really nice check at the end of the year. The sire, Demon Warlock, recently moved from Washington to Arizona:

Trainingat the Bar was claimed for $25,000 on April 17, 2008 out of a race at Bay Meadows by Horseplayers Racing Club. Trainingat the Bar had a full to Redsolocup on February 4.

Race 5 Saturday:  River of Aces goes wire-to-wire in 103.32 for the 5.5 Furlongs. She is by Sam’s Ace out of Itsrivertime.  River of Aces, a very solid mare, got away with the second slowest 4 Furlong time of the day (45.94) for a sprint race (the slowest was a Maiden $5,000 in the 10th race which went in 46.31). She certainly picked it up the next furlong and a half (17.8). The Essex family picks up both an Owners’ and Breeders’ bonus for this nice Washington-bred.

Watch for Table of Gold the next few races. Closed into a slow pace and was wide on the turn.

Race 8 Saturday: Won by Whistle Cat who ran the fastest 5.5 Furlongs of the day in 102.88  (Lotta Attitude went in 102.99 in a Maiden Special Weight in Race 4). Running for REV racing, Whistle Cat is by Parker’s Storm Cat out of Whistle Tester (Dunant-IRE). Parker’s Storm Cat has led the Washington-sire list for the last several years:

The dam Whistle Tester placed in three stakes races in Grants Pass (I lived in Grants Pass for one year where we had a pet goat named Barney) including a win in the HPBA Au Revoir Handicap. She also placed in the Crooked River Round Up Stakes at Prineville. As we learned from the last post, all roads lead back to Prineville:

Whistle Tester has a 2 year-old by Parker’s Storm Cat and was bred back to that stallion this year.

Saturday Times:

Fastest ¼ Mile: Freedomofthehills and Camp Granada – 22.04

Fastest ½ Mile: He’s Zuberrific – 44.85

Fastest 5 Furlongs: Whistle Cat – 56.86

Fastest 5.5 Furlongs: Whistle Cat – 102.88

Race 1 Sunday:  Won by Bella Angelina in 104.24. By Raise the Bluff (2 winners on the weekend) standing at Eldorado Farm:

Bella Angelina’s dam is Walkin’ With Angie. Walkin’ with Angie was a $30,000 Keeneland September purchase by Ron Crockett. Angie had four winners as a dam.

Please note that Cielo Dulce is the dam of the second place finisher Sweet Saga. I plan on having a “Broodmare of the Week” post on this blog and Cielo Dulce is a likely candidate in future weeks. She has a very interesting family that includes new stallion Graydar.

Race 4 Sunday: Won by Charlie’s Gold in 57.34. Owned and bred by a man of similar height to me, Keith Swagerty. We were also both drafted by the New York Knicks:

Charlie’s Gold is by Liberty Gold out of Ruthies Inlaws. Ruthies Inlaws made over $75,000 and produced 6 winners.

Race 6 Sunday: Clearly named after Enumclaw, Hip Hop City won the 6th Race in 57.19. Bred by the Gibsons, Hip Hop City is by the Carson City stallion Waiting Game out of Hip Hop Blue. Hip Hop Blue has a two-year old by Formal Gold and a three-year old by Lost Canyon that has yet to start.

Race 7 Sunday: No Washington-bred winner in this race but I thought there were two potential claims Sunday. One was Say Say. So I just wanted to brag I was right. I was humbled when the other claim did not happen. More on the mare Knight Weave in the future as she is a potential subject for “Broodmare of the Week.”

Race 9 Sunday: A very nice win by Strawberry Dawn for the Spooners. She won by over eight lengths in 103.08. The Spooners are also the breeders so they get a double bonus. By California sire Tribal Rule, Strawberry Dawn is out of Ruby Dawn (Pioneering). Ruby Dawn placed in five stakes races:

Ruby Dawn Race Record

She’s already produced Lilly’s a Jewel (You and I) who won over $60,000 at the track. Ruby Dawn has an unraced two-year old filly by Harbor the Gold and had a full sister to Strawberry Dawn this year. Strawberry Dawn seems stakes bound after that performance.

Race 10 Sunday: Won by the well-named Spot on Babe in 102.15, which was the fastest time for 5.5 Furlongs for the weekend. Spot on Babe took control from the start and did not look back. She is sired by Tribal Rule (two wins in a row for that sire on Sunday) and out of Irene’s Bonus Baby who won the Barbara Shinpoch back in 2006. On top of that, Irene’s Bonus Baby’s 2009 offspring, Century Union, won a race at Turf Paradise yesterday. Irene’s Bonus Baby has a two-year old by Private Gold, a yearling by Papa Clem and is expecting a Coast Guard foal this year.

Sunday Times:

Fastest ¼ Mile: Once Upon a Song - 21.81

Fastest ½ Mile:  Spot on Babe - 44.31

Fastest 5 Furlongs:  Spot on Babe - 55.91

Fastest 5.5 Furlongs: Spot on Babe - 102.15

That is it for now. Next post will focus on the other higher-class races from the weekend.

Have a good week and always love your animals.

Will
