Second Weekend - Washington Bred Winners

9 out of 18 races were won by Washington-breds last weekend.

Race 1 Saturday: Won by Tsarina Heaven in 103.88 for 5.5 Furlongs.  Tsarina Heaven is by Harbor the Gold out of Princess Affair (Fighting Affair). She races for her breeder John Shumate. It goes without saying that Harbor the Gold is currently the most successful sire in Washington (he had four winners this weekend). He stands at Bar C Racing Stables in Oregon (which clearly has a nice lawn than me):

Race 2 Saturday: Won by first-time starter My Chief in 103.12, the fastest time at the distance on the day (A day that the track may have been a little tricky with the rain). By Harbor the Gold out of the Slewdledo mare Ms. Melange. Ms. Melange was a shrewd $700 purchase by Scott Gruedner at the 2012 WTBOA sale especially considering she was in foal to Harbor the Gold at the time. That mating produced a filly on February 20 and Ms. Melange should be foaling a Private Gold this year.

Race 3 Saturday: Won by the interestingly named first-time starter Wedgey Time in 58.12. Wedgey Time is by Raise the Bluff (several winners for him this year so far) out of the Peterhof mare Jillybell. Jillybell made two career starts. However, the second dam is Exit’s Baby who was a multiple stakes winner at Portland Meadows and made 85 starts.

Race 5 Saturday: Won by Mr. Top Kat in 103.60. By Katowice out of Czechmate Miss (He’s Tops), Mr. Top Kat was purchased for $900 at the Washington winter sale. The most important thing to note is the second dam: Whimsical Aire. She deserves her own blog entry at some point so I will not go in-depth here. Here is a little taste though:

The owners will be sued for copyright and trademark infringement because there is only one Mr. Top Kat:

Respect Cobweb, the world's most lazy and Top Kat. Is that George Clooney he is sleeping on?

Race 8 Saturday:  I simply have no idea why Belt only cost $8,500 at the 2011 WTBOA sale. He should have sold for at least twice that amount. I reviewed my notes and he was one of my favorite colts in the sale. He was big, beautiful and athletic looking. Belt is by Cahill Road (my boy) out of La Mariah (Country Light). La Mariah does not get enough respect. She’s had 5 horses sold that have raced (the only one not to race yet is a two-year old name Hoodslide (Nationhood) so that is excusable considering it is April). The total purchase price of those 5 horses was a combined $35,700. Total earnings to date for these 5 horses is over $144,000. In fact, all 5 of these horses have earned back well over their purchase price. The second dam is Windsong Maria who was a multiple stakes winner and won almost $140,000:

Do yourself a favor and go back and watch Belt’s race on the Emerald Downs' website. He was pinched back on the turn, went wide and still won by almost three lengths. He was clearly the best horse in the race in my opinion. Belt won in 103.50.

La Mariah’s yearling is another Nationhood and La Mariah is expecting an Atta Boy Roy. Clearly, Blue Ribbon is bribing the Birklid’s to get La Mariah to their young stallions. More on Blue Ribbon's stallions to come in future posts.

Saturday Times:

Fastest ¼ Mile: My Chief – 21.14

Fastest ½ Mile: My Chief – 43.87

Fastest 5 Furlongs: Cantcatchme– 56.41

Fastest 5.5 Furlongs: My Chief – 103.12

Race 2 Sunday:  Won by Point Da Harbor in 58.09 (a fairly slow time on the day). By Harbor the Gold out of the Point Given mare Point Proven. Point Given was one of my favorite horses (If you see the guy walking around the track with an old Point Given hat on that looks like a male model, that is me). Point Da Harbor was a $4,700 WTBOA purchase. Check out this beat down by Point Given:

The Blog is so pretty and now comes with tabs!

Race 3 Sunday: Won by Ms P K Blue in 103.58.  Ms P K Blue sat off a blistering pace for this condition (21.59 and 44.73) and closed to win by a head. Ms P K is by the California stallion Decarchy. Decarchy is by Distant View out of the great, great, great (or great cubed) Toussaud. I will not write about her in two sentences because she deserves several volumes of blog posts. She is up there with Weekend Surprise and Hasili for me as the greatest mares in the last several decades. More to follow on her. See below for more information about Ms. P K Blue’s dam Bluledo.

Race 7 Sunday: Stikine Slough went to the front and never looked back winning the 5.5 Furlongs in 103.13. “Blue” was clearly the best horse in what appeared to be a competitive race before the gates opened.

Guess what? Blue is by Harbor the Gold who had four winners this weekend. Kudos!

Out of the mare Bluledo, who had two winners on the day, Stikine Slough is named after the Stikine River in Alaska. I just researched and learned that a Backwater Slough is a water body that has a slow flow to it (I did not know what a Slough was but my wife did and it made me feel stupid. I then asked her who the second dam of Belt was? Payback!). I am not kidding there is a 4:47 YouTube video of people doing nothing but motoring through the Stikine Slough in Alaska but you have more important things to do like breathe and watch Sea Galley commercials.

Stikine Slough was purchased for $40,000 at the 2012 WTBOA sale. His full brother, named Brewingintheblue was purchase for $11,000 at the 2013 WTBOA sale. Stikine Slough has a yearling full sister waiting in the wings. Total progeny earnings for Bluledo’s offspring is over $298,000.

Note: I promise to deliver straight forward analysis of these races but I can't help but be a little biased for Blue and this win. Also, if I win a race this year, all straight-forward analysis and humbleness will go out the window for a day (and then horse racing will teach me a lesson, again).

Race 9 Sunday: Won by Claudia’s Cahill in 104.47. Claudia’s Cahill is by Cahill Road (more on him next week) and out of the Free at Last mare Mizzo. Bred by El Dorado Farms and Linda Swanson, Claudia’s Cahill sold for $3,100 to Claudia Canouse (Wonder how the horse got its name?) at the 2011 WTBOA sale. Mizzo won almost $120,000 in her career.  We are expecting to see a Coast Guard from this mare at the 2014 WTBOA sale. More on Coast Guard later as I will be writing an article about him for the WTBOA magazine.

Sunday Times:

Fastest ¼ Mile: La Tiela - 21.59

Fastest ½ Mile:  Scat Daddybaby - 44.09

Fastest 5 Furlongs:  Scat Daddybaby - 55.85

Fastest 5.5 Furlongs: Star of the Dia - 102.91 (No 5.5 Furlongs time for Scat)

Fastest 6 Furlongs: Scatdaddy Baby - 108.20

Next post will be about our “Broodmare of the Week”

Have a good week and always love your animals.
