A Tribute to Military Hawk

Welcome to Military Hawk, my blog about the Washington thoroughbred industry! It is my goal to promote interest in the Washington Thoroughbred industry, through writing about all facets of the industry.  

I would be remiss if my first entry was not about the horse this blog is named after: Military Hawk. He was the epitome of what a Washington thoroughbred is and should be all about: tough, fast and sound. He made 86 starts and won over $686,000. During his career, he was a multiple stakes winner and graded stakes placed. His Equibase profile tells his incredible story.

Yep, he was awesome.

Military Hawk was one of my sports heroes growing up.  I began going to Longacres on my own in 1989, which was Military Hawk’s two-year old year.  I followed him throughout his career. He also bridged the gap between my Longacres memories and my new memories at Emerald Downs by running on opening day of Emerald on June 20, 1996.  He won two claiming races at Emerald Downs before being retired in 1997. He was elected to the Washington Hall of Fame in 2013. Emerald Downs did an excellent five-minute piece on his induction.

With all due respect to my other heroes Captain Condo, Kent Green and Cadette Stevens, I could not think of a better name than Military Hawk for my blog about Washington racing.  

A little bit about myself. I am the Owner/Manager of Brewer Thoroughbreds, LLC. Under that name, I am an owner and breeder of Washington thoroughbreds. I am also an avid handicapper and “investor“ in Pick 4s and 5s. I am the Vice President of the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association and a board member of the Washington Thoroughbred Foundation (My views in this blog are solely my own). I currently own 2005 Washington Older Mare Champion Marva Jean in partnership with Griffin Place. I also own a small percentage of two horses at the racetrack and have a Ferrari-looking yearling by Midnight Lute out of Marva Jean. My goal is to acquire an “elite broodmare band” and participate at the highest level of the sport in Washington. I plan to write more about my horses, breeding, goals and handicapping in future posts.   

I would like to thank Larry and Sharon Ross for giving me permission to use Military Hawk’s name on this blog. They gave him a good life after his racing days were over which is something all owners and trainers should aspire to do for their horses. Most importantly, I want to thank Military Hawk himself for providing me with the thrills that began my life-long love affair with the horse and the greatest game in the world.
