The Importance of Washington-breds: Sixth Weekend - Washington-bred Winners

Not going to start with a joke because the focus should be on how great Washington-breds ran this last weekend at Emerald Downs (Thoroughbred races only):

     (1) All 7 of the races ran on Friday night were won by Washington-breds. ALL 7!
     (2) Washington-breds won 19 of 23 races this weekend. Let me repeat that, 19 of 23 races.
     (3) 100 of the 151 entries were Washington-breds last weekend.
     (4)  This year 78 of the 131 races have been won by Washington-breds. Over 60% of the races.
     (5) The local stallion Nacheezmo had 4 winners this weekend. See below for Nacheezmo jokes.

In my view, the most important things in horse racing are: (1) the Horses (2) the Handle (3) the Owners and (4) a financially viable Racetrack. Also, a pillar of every successful racing state is a strong breeding program. A strong state-breeding program is also important because it helps Handle and supplies Owners with the horses they demand. The key to Handle is having bigger fields in each race (carryovers also help. See this Memorial Day at Gulfstream). If you want to fill races to the brim, you have to have a strong breeding program in your state to support those numbers. We, as a collective, need to build our breeding program from the ground up (as is the case with every successful business). We have to think strategically about the future of Washington racing right now and determine how we are going to fill these races in 5, 10 and 15 years, not just the next few weeks.

Emerald Downs, especially Sophia, are doing an excellent job of bringing new owners into the game with the Emerald Racing Club, but in concert with that we need to work on how to increase our Handle with the potential growing amount of owners. You see, Handle leads to bigger purses and we need those bigger purses to keep these new owners we are cultivating in the game. The day rate is high relative to purses and we need to boost what these owners get to keep them solvent and in the game.

But we also need to provide these new owners will well-bred Washington horses. The amount of foals in this state is in decline and that needs to be corrected soon because it is an important part of the equation for owners, the racetrack, the trainers, the grooms, the vets and the breeders' success.

My motto is let's stop fighting over pieces of a smaller pie and work on making the entire pie bigger, TOGETHER.

Enough Diatribe:

Race 1 Friday: Won by Poly Squat in 1:10.78. Poly Squat closed from last to get the win. By Raise the Bluff (keeps getting winners) out of Radio Caroline (Siphon). Raise the Bluff, again, stands at Eldorado Farms and had some very expensive yearlings sell at the WTBOA sale last year. Something to consider:

Sweet Saga was claimed out of this race by Stormy Hull. Stormy sold Sweet Saga’s half-sister, Sweet Renata, at last year’s WTBOA sale for $67,000.

Race 2 Friday: Won by Nifty’s Tee Time in 58:46, which was the fastest 6 Furlongs of the day. By Vitesse out of Nifty Nite (Slewledo). Nifty Nite has two horses on the way from Bar C Racing’s new stallion Sixthirteen:

http://www.barcracingstables.com/sixthirteen

Race 3 Friday: Won by Havin a Good Day in 1:37.72 for 1 mile (8 Furlongs). By Delineator out of Twentysix on Board (Son of Briartic), Havin a Good Day has almost reached the $100,000 mark in earnings.

Race 4 Friday:  Won by Foolish Miss in 1:04.28 for 5.5 Furlongs. By Nacheezmo out of Lady Ledoux (Synastry), Foolish Miss came off the pace to win at odds of 30.80 to 1. A little more information on Nacheezmo:

Race 5 Friday: Won by Slewbie Doo in 1:10.51 for 6 Furlongs. By Nationhood and out of Tis a Slew (Slewdledo), Slewbie Doo closed from last to get up by a neck at odds of 5.90 to 1.  There are three more Nationhood’s in the pipeline for Tis a Slew.

Race 6 Friday:  Won by Clemens Brook in 1:09.11. By Petersburg out of My Brook (Harmony Creek), Clemens Brook opened up a 6-length lead in the stretch before winning by 3 plus lengths.  Multiple Stakes Placed Royal Moses was claimed out of this race for $20,000 by Doris Harwood.

Race 7 Friday: Won by Athina Lee, who was an $80,000 WTBOA purchase from the consignment of Stormy Hull.  By English Channel out of Time for Magic (Pentelicus), Athina Lee ran the 6 Furlongs in 1:10.86 in the $4,000N2L race. My favorite kind of harbor, Promiscuous Harbor, was claimed out of this race.

Race 2 Saturday: Opening Buzz wins running 6 Furlongs in 1:11.00. Goin out Tonite set a brisk pace for this condition (State-bred Fillies and Mares 2.5K N2L) setting the race up for Opening Buzz to close and win and Brats Brat to close to finish second. Opening Buzz is by Polish Miner out of Repletions Victory (Repletion).

Race 3 Saturday:  Won by Buds a Flyin in 1:09.21 for 6 Furlongs.  Buds a Flyin is by Waiting Game out of Flying Patsy (by my boy Peterhof).  Buds a Flying set a comfortable early pace and then really picked it up in the final 2 Furlongs (24.21).

Race 5 Saturday: Won by Troop Ship in 1:03.68 for 5.5 Furlongs. By Nacheezmo, Troop Ship is out of Barbs Last (Detox).

Race 6 Saturday: Won by Terry Gillihan’s Orito in 1:09.66. By the El Dorado sire Private Gold, Orito is out of Maryalice Indallas (Texas Glitter). Orito has a full brother who is a 2-year old and was bred to Raise the Bluff in 2013. Some information on Private Gold:

http://www.eldoradofarms.net/private_gold.htm

Race 7 Saturday: Won by Memphis Beach in a fast 1:08.55. By the prolific sire Harbor the Gold and out of Chic Crossing (Valley Crossing), Memphis Beach was sold for $19,000 at the 2010 WTBOA Sale. Do I really need to advertise Harbor the Gold more?

Race 9 Saturday: Won by Marvin’s Magic in 1:10.21. By Aptitude and out of the extremely well-owned Marva Jean (West by West), Marvin’s Magic now has 8 wins in a 31-race career. Marva Jean, as if she was owned by Federico Tesio, has been smartly bred to Bellamy Road (2-year old named Raspberry Road), Midnight Lute (yearling Ferrari), and is in foal to Harbor the Gold. The breeder, who is obviously a genius, sent me the following pictures of her:

Stunning! I would buy all her yearlings. What? Too Much? Ok, sorry.

Here is the last known picture of Federico Tesio. It happened to be taken at the NFC Championship game:

Race 3 Sunday: Won by K-Swag’s Twentyten in 1:38.19 for the mile. By Liberty Gold and out of Sultry Bebe (Sultry Song), Twentyten appears to be the last foal out of Sultry Bebe.

Race 4 Sunday: Won by favorite Mo’s Flashy Date in 109:16 for 6 Furlongs.  By Nacheezmo, and out of Crimson Saint (Encino), Mo was claimed out of the race for $2,500. Sick of talking about Nacheezmo with all his winners so it's time for some jokes. Nacheezmo is a cheese substitute:

Without the wife's permission, I am going to take the Nacheezmo challenge. Will eat nothing but Nacheezmo for 60 days (Ron, please make sure it's available in the Turf Club). I may overload on Sodium and Dietary Fiber but my bone growth will be great with all the calcium. So no OCD surgery for me!

Race 5 SundayNacheezmo goes back-to-back with a victory by his son Snooper Dauper.  Out of a mare suggestively named Nice Package (Toooverprime), Snooper Dauper was winning his second race in row.

Race 7 Sunday: Won by the fast 4-year old filly Wind a Flyin. She popped out of the gate and set some good early fractions winning in 1:09.89 for 6 Furlongs.  By Blazonry and out of Trumping (Quiet American), Wind a Flyin was stepping up from a 4k N2L to open 7.5k and was still able to take the lead and put away open competition.

Race 8 Sunday: My Chief is going places. Coming out of one of the faster races of the meet on April 19th (Cantcatchme was second in that race and came back to win a 25K Maiden), My Chief again set the pace against Allowance Optional Claiming company and went gate-to-wire in 1:03.01 for 5.5 Furlongs. By Harbor the Gold out of Ms Melange (Slewdledo), My Chief is bound to win a few more this season.

Race 10 Sunday: Won by Katsthoughts in 1:04.96 for 5.5 Furlongs.  Katsthoughts is by Parker’s Storm Cat out of Last Thoughts (Doneraile Court). Katsthoughts has a 2-year old half brother by Harbor the Gold named Moby who is beginning his career on Saturday in the first 2-year-old race of the year. Ben's Cat keeps on winning and that will keep Parker's Storm Cat at the top of the sire list in Washington.
